Bunge

Spotlight

Bunge is a US agribusiness and food company. In 1818, Bunge was established as a Dutch import-export trading business and by 1859, the company was recognized as one of the world’s leading commodities traders. The company expanded into Argentina in 1884, to Brazil in 1905, and then to North America in 1918—the world’s largest agricultural market. In 1923, Bunge North America Grain Corporation was founded in New York City to trade raw agricultural commodities. By 1995, Bunge Limited was incorporated in Bermuda. Bunge operates today in 40 countries in the areas of agribusiness, food and ingredients, sugar, and bioenergy. Its agribusiness is involved in the purchase, storage, transportation, processing, and sale of grains, oilseeds, and fertilizers. Bunge produces edible oils and milled grains for its food and ingredients business, and the company’s sugar and bioenergy business produces and sells sugar and ethanol. The company reported $18.87 billion in total assets and $1.76 billion in gross profit for fiscal year 2017.

  • Bunge has been operating as a grain company for nearly 200 years.

  • Bunge’s milling division, which operates five mills, is the largest corn dry miller in the world.

  • Bunge and Cargill are the primary forces behind deforestation for soybeans across Latin America, and both companies are among the largest exporters of soy from South America to Europe.

  • From 2011 – 2015, the deforestation of 567,542 hectares in the Brazilian Cerrado were attributed to Bunge’s operations.

  • Bunge, ADM, Cargill, Louis Dreyfus, and Wilmar collectively control an estimate of up to 90% of the global grain trade.

  • In 2006, The United States Environmental Protection Agency reached a $13.9 million settlement with Bunge North America Inc. following charges against Bunge for air pollution and increased emissions. The settlement was expected to eliminate more than 2,200 tons of harmful emissions annually.

  • In 2010, the Argentina tax agency charged Bunge of large-scale tax evasion amounting to $476 million in unpaid taxes and duties between the years of 2007 to 2009.
