Walmart is the world’s largest company by revenue, the world’s largest retailer, and largest private employer. In the US, Walmart operates more than 4,761 stores and is the second largest employer, behind the US Federal Government. The company has four business segments: Walmart US, Walmart International, Sam’s Club, and Walmart US eCommerce. In total the company operates more than 11,200 retail stores under 55 banners in 27 countries and e-commerce websites. Around 140 million people visit Walmart in person or online every week. The company reported $198.82 billion in total assets and $124.61 billion in gross profit for fiscal year 2017.

Walmart has faced numerous accusations related to labor violations and the mistreatment of employees. The accusations range from denying employees overtime pay, punishing employees for participating in walkouts on Black Fridays, not allowing staff to take breaks, discriminating against women for equal pay and promotions, violating child-labor laws, and for neglecting poor working conditions, to name but a few.

In 2016, Asia Floor Wage Alliance, an international coalition of trade unions and human rights organizations released a report that identified “persistent rights violations” against Walmart supply chain workers in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, and Indonesia. Workers face “intensive labor exploitation and abuse,” and many complain of sexual harassment.
