Yum!

Spotlight

Yum! Brands is a US fast-food company that operates, develops, franchises, and licenses a portfolio of restaurants which include its three brands Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut. YUM! Brands is one of the world’s largest fast-food restaurants and operates 45,000 outlets in 139 countries, and approximately 50% of profits come from outside of the US. The company reported $5.31 billion in total assets and $2.92 billion in gross profit for fiscal year 2017.

  • Nearly 60% of Yum! restaurants are outside of the United States.

  • By the end of 2018, over 98% of the company’s restaurants will be franchises.

  • Franchising has allowed YUM! to expand its worldwide presence through a far-reaching network of local operators, and in exchange for royalties and franchise fees, each franchisee is allowed to use the company’s branding and other intellectual property.

  • Distributor McLane Foodservice is the primary supplier for most of the company’s restaurants in the US.

  • In 2015, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and Kentucky Fried Chicken, all brands belonging to Yum! received deplorable ratings for their industry sourcing practices, and at the time the company did not appear concerned in implementing more humane farming practices.

  • In 2004, Yum! was one of several corporations in opposition to California’s Proposition 72, which was an initiative that would have required large and medium-size business owners to provide health benefits to employees.

  • In 2014, as a result of Yum! underpaying their employees, it was estimated that the company costed US taxpayers $648 million in benefits, as Yum! employees had to apply for food stamps, Medicaid, and other forms of public assistance to help them get by.

  • Yum! was under scrutiny in 2011 for sourcing palm oil, paper products, and other goods from suppliers known for destroying rainforests in Indonesia and elsewhere.
